The US National Institute for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Construction will create the first-of-its-kind institute for the application of AI in design, construction and operation of buildings and infrastructure systems. Mani Golparvar, Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology Entrepreneurship at University of Illinois has been a key part of the creation of the institute. Mani will provide an overview of their journey so far, aspirations and how the institute fits within other US developments in the field of project data analytics.

In the 2nd part of his presentation Mani will present how reality capture and BIM data can be processed to form a visual production management system for achieving production efficiency on construction sites. Specifically, he will present how images and videos from 360-degree cameras, smartphones and drones can be used within computer vision algorithms to automatically generate 3D reality models of indoor and outdoor environments over a project timeline. He will also demonstrate how measurable reality models can be integrated with BIM and project schedules in the form of digital twins such that AI algorithms can track progress and productivity and identify risk for potential delays.

Short Bio
Mani Golparvar is the CTO and Co-founder of Reconstruct Inc., a Software-as-a-Service company that integrates reality modeling, BIM and project scheduling to visually track progress, analyze productivity, and proactively detect potential delays using predictive analytics. He is also Associate Professor of Civil Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology Entrepreneurship at University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His work in the area of computer vision, machine learning, and BIM has been the recipient of many numerous awards including 2018 Walter Huber Research Prize from ASCE, 2017 National Top 20 Under 40 from ENR; 2017 Hojjat Adeli Innovation in Civil Engineering from Wiley and 2016 Dan Halpin Award for Scholarship in Construction from ASCE. Reconstruct has also been recognized by several awards such as Crunchbase’s 50 hot tech companies globally in 2019, 2016 World Economic Forum most innovative startup company and 2016 Innovation Award from Turner Construction.
